Biotechnology crop traits have been applied on a widespread commercial global basis since 1996, making it the most rapidly adopted crop technology in agriculture. The primary biotechnologies used have included technology delivering herbicide tolerance and insect resistance for crops, such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and canola. This technology has provided farmers with productivity improvements through a combination of yield improvements and cost reductions. Thus, this technology has had an impact on prices of cereals and oilseeds (and their derivatives) both in countries where biotech traits were applied and in the global market. Realizing the surging significance of biotechnology application in global crop markets, this study first summarizes the... |

The advantages of transplanting with respect to direct sowing has been widely reported in several vegetable species, but there are few studies in Cucurbits, and even fewer in summer squash (Cucurbita maxima (Carr.) Millán var. zapallito). Morphological and physiological characteristics of hybrid varieties determine earliness of between 5 to 10 days compared to traditional cultivars. The aim of the study was to compare the summer squash setting systems, direct sowing and nursery seedlings, and to determine their effect on yield and earliness in different genotypes. The hybrid varieties F1 Angelo and Espejo, and the standard varieties Any and Any Plus were used combined with two setting systems (direct sowing and nursery seedlings). Male and female flowering... |

A trial was established using three month old asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) plants in a volcanic soil at Chillán (36°32 S; 71°55 W). Experimental design was randomized complete blocks with four replicates. Plots had four 6m long rows of plants. Distance between rows was 1.5 m and in-row 0.2 m. The evaluated cultivars were: Atlas, Grande and Apollo from Asparagus Seeds and Transplants (California), Jersey Giant, Jersey Gem, Jersey General, Jersey King, Jersey Knight and Jersey Supreme from Jersey Asparagus Farms (New Jersey), and the controls were UC-157 F1 and F2. Spears were trimmed 18 cm long after harvest. The highest cumulative marketable yield was obtained by Jersey Supreme (43 Mg ha-1 in five years), and the lowest one... |

ABSTRACT The study aimed to evaluate the effect of different NPK doses on the yield components of papaya hybrid 'Caliman 01'. The experiment was carried at the company WG Fruticultura, located in the Chapada do Apodi region. Five nitrogen doses (94, 590, 837, 1088 and 1575 kg N ha-1), five phosphorus doses (10, 72, 96, 133 and 195 kg P2O5 ha-1) and five potassium doses (75, 527, 752, 978 and 1429 kg K2O ha-1), were combined according to the experimental matrix Pan Puebla II, in 16 combinations and distributed in a randomized block design, with five repetitions. The plots consisted of six papaya plants and the four central plants were evaluated. The fertilizers urea, monoammonium phosphate and potassium chloride were used as NPK sources, respectively. The... |

ABSTRACT This study evaluates the potential of rubber tree clones (Hevea spp.) under four tapping systems for the Northwestern region of the State of Paraná with the objective of enhance genetic diversification and increase natural rubber production in this new and promising region for rubber tree cultivation by selecting the better combination of clone and tapping system. The experiment was installed at Guanabara Farm, municipality of Paranapoema, Paraná State, in a split-plot randomized complete blocks experimental design with three replications. In the plots 12 clones were tested, namely RRIM 600 (control), IRCA 18, IRCA 111, IRCA 130, PB 235, PB 252, PB 260, PB 330, IAC 15, IAC 35, IAC 41 and RO 38. The subplot treatments consisted of four tapping... |

Production functions to explain regional wheat yields have not been studied extensively in the Canadian prairies. The objective of this study is to employ a Just-Pope production function to examine the relationship between fertilizer inputs, soil quality, biodiversity indicators, cultivars qualifying for Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR), and climatic conditions on the mean and variance of spring wheat yields. Using regional-level wheat data from Manitoba, Canada, model results show nitrogen fertilizer, temporal diversity, and PBR wheat cultivars are associated with increased yield variance. Mean wheat yield is reduced by the proportion of land in wheat, the interaction of growing temperature and precipitation, and spatial diversity. By contrast, higher soil... |
