Estratificación y estimación de los rendimientos de la flota de buques procesadores congeladores arrastreros. OceanDocs
Bertolotti, M.I.; Hernandez, D.R.; Pagani, A.N.; Castañeda, M.F..
In order to better understand the behaviour of the trawler processing freezer fleet in the Argentine Sea, an analysis of yields and structural characteristics for the 1989-98 period was carried out. The relationship between structural variables and yield expressed in kilos per day was explained with a simplified asymptotic model. The fleet was divided into four homogeneous strata. Common hake is the target of stratum I and stratum II which are deeply affected by overfishing of the species. As of 1993, in stratum III, common hake was replaced by other pelagic and demersal species, mainly hoki. In fleet stratum IV southern blue whiting and hoki were caught. Catches of the latter increased during the last three years.

Elias, I.; Pereiro, R..
Artisanal fishing activities bivalve extraction through diving, hand-collection of octopuses and beach seine fishing are currently the only ways to exploit the coastal resources inhabiting the Argentine Northern Patagonian gulfs 42°43°S from the SW Atlantic. These are time-restricted activities. Diving and hand-collection are limited by management and sanitary policies while resource variability and commercial demand limit beach fishing. The objective of this work was to test a productive alternative, i.e., the use of longlines to increase and diversify catches in order to improve commercialization, contribute to a rational management and alleviate the pressure put on the resources exploited at present. Results obtained indicate that profitability of...

Etat de la Peche des Sparides du Golfe du Lion. Application de Deux Modeles de Gestion (Schaefer, 1957; Beverton et Holt, 1957) aux Stocks de Pagellus erythrinus et Boops boops. ArchiMer
In the Gulf of Lion, only three species of Sparidae present a true economical interest : The pandora, the bogue and the gilt head bream. They totalize 90% of the catches of this family. The model of Schaefer is inapplicable to the pandora and bogue stocks and the author could not determine an optimal fishing effort for these two species. The important heterogeneity of size and equipment of the trawlers and the notable imprecision of the fishery statistics explain, perhaps, the inadequacies of this logistic model to this fishing. The author has defined the potentialities of the production of the pandora and bogue stock using the analytical model of Beverton and Holt. He verifies that an increase of the yield corresponds to a decrease of the fishing effort....

Evaluación del abadejo (Genypterus blacodes) en el Atlántico Sudoccidental por medio de modelos de producción dinámicos. OceanDocs
Cordo, H.D..
Two dynamic production models were applied to assess the status of ling Genypterus blacodes stock in the SW Atlantic. The simplest (biomass dynamic model)and a more complex one (structured production model) were fitted with commercial CPUEs as abundance indices. Ling is one of the most important demersal fishes in Argentine waters. It is a demersal fish found between 35°and 55°S that shows the highest concentration in summer, between 42°and 48°S. In winter, schools disperse over the whole range of distribution. Argentine ling fishery started developing in 1986 when catches surpassed 15000 mt/year to stabilize, in recent years, at around 23000 mt/year. The species is caught mainly as by-catch by trawlers with bottom net that direct their effort to hake...

Evaluating the Production and Price Impacts of Biotechnology Application in Crop Markets AgEcon
Brookes, Graham; Yu, Tun-Hsiang (Edward); Tokgoz, Simla; Elobeid, Amani E..
Biotechnology crop traits have been applied on a widespread commercial global basis since 1996, making it the most rapidly adopted crop technology in agriculture. The primary biotechnologies used have included technology delivering herbicide tolerance and insect resistance for crops, such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and canola. This technology has provided farmers with productivity improvements through a combination of yield improvements and cost reductions. Thus, this technology has had an impact on prices of cereals and oilseeds (and their derivatives) both in countries where biotech traits were applied and in the global market. Realizing the surging significance of biotechnology application in global crop markets, this study first summarizes the...

Evaluation of Crop Setting Systems for Four Summer Squash Varieties Cucurbita maxima (Carr.) Millán var. zapallito Agricultura Técnica
De Grazia,Javier; Tittonell,Pablo Adrián; Salvador Perniola,Omar; Caruso,Ariel; Chiesa,Angel.
The advantages of transplanting with respect to direct sowing has been widely reported in several vegetable species, but there are few studies in Cucurbits, and even fewer in summer squash (Cucurbita maxima (Carr.) Millán var. zapallito). Morphological and physiological characteristics of hybrid varieties determine earliness of between 5 to 10 days compared to traditional cultivars. The aim of the study was to compare the summer squash setting systems, direct sowing and nursery seedlings, and to determine their effect on yield and earliness in different genotypes. The hybrid varieties F1 Angelo and Espejo, and the standard varieties Any and Any Plus were used combined with two setting systems (direct sowing and nursery seedlings). Male and female flowering...

Extraction of pectin from apple pomace BABT
Canteri-Schemin,Maria Helene; Fertonani,Heloísa Cristina Ramos; Waszczynskyj,Nina; Wosiacki,Gilvan.
As apple-processing units are now in expansion in Brazil, industrial by-products like pomace play an important role in pectin manufacture. The objective of this article was to determine a pratical follow-up to the extraction of pectin from apple pomace and to characterize it in a laboratory, on a small scale, aiming at establishing the optimum conditions for acid extraction. The highest yields were obtained when [1]apple pomace was dried and ground to obtain an apple flour to be used as raw material, [2] citric or nitric acids were used and [3] when the citric acid concentration was 6.2 g/100 ml and the time of reaction was 153 minutes. The apple variety in itself was not significant in pectin yield. The degree of esterification (DE = 68.84 %) of the...

Factors Influencing Wheat Yield and Variability: Evidence from Manitoba, Canada AgEcon
Carew, Richard; Smith, Elwin G.; Grant, Cynthia.
Production functions to explain regional wheat yields have not been studied extensively in the Canadian prairies. The objective of this study is to employ a Just-Pope production function to examine the relationship between fertilizer inputs, soil quality, biodiversity indicators, cultivars qualifying for Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR), and climatic conditions on the mean and variance of spring wheat yields. Using regional-level wheat data from Manitoba, Canada, model results show nitrogen fertilizer, temporal diversity, and PBR wheat cultivars are associated with increased yield variance. Mean wheat yield is reduced by the proportion of land in wheat, the interaction of growing temperature and precipitation, and spatial diversity. By contrast, higher soil...
